When you think of “hormones” it’s quite likely that you immediately associate symptoms of your monthly hormone cycle. As in, “Ugh, I’m seriously PMS-ing this month!” While it’s true that the symptoms you feel after ovulation and before your cycle begins are related to fluctuating estrogen and progesterone, there are other ways that your hormone levels affect you and your life.
It's helpful to start thinking of hormones not as related to a menstrual cycle, and more as chemicals that fluctuate all day, every day, as a result of your habits and lifestyle choices.
Or maybe your hormones have shifted so that you don’t have a regular monthly cycle. While you may not be menstruating, your hormones are still cycling every month to a lesser degree.
Beyond this aspect of hormones which relates to being a woman, nearly every bodily function is related to different hormones and chemicals in your body. Technically, these chemical compounds are referred to as “signaling molecules” because they literally tell your brain and organs what to do. They are the messengers that regulate all of your physiology.
In short, you ARE your hormones.
Hormones influence things like:
- Mental clarity
- Sleep quality
- Heart rate
- Recovery from workouts
- Food cravings
- Thought patterns
- AND SO MUCH MORE!
The key to a happy and energetic life is to take actions to optimize your body’s hormones.
